Rockbox on iPod: compatibility and installation

Rockbox is an open-source alternative firmware for selected iPods. It adds audio formats, an equaliser, ReplayGain, themes, folder browsing and advanced features. It does not change the hardware and does not support every generation.

Which iPods support Rockbox?

Status can change: always check the official Target Status page before installing.

Before installation

  • Identify the exact model, not just its capacity. Video and Classic use different targets and bootloaders.
  • Make a complete backup. A restore or conversion may erase music and settings.
  • Check the format. Official iPod builds require FAT32; HFS+ Mac-formatted iPods need restoring or conversion.
  • Charge the battery, use a reliable USB cable and download Utility and manuals only from the official site.

Installation: Video and Classic are different

  1. iPod Video 5/5.5G: Rockbox Utility is recommended. Select the correct target, install bootloader and build, then test start-up and USB.
  2. iPod Classic 6/7G: follow only the current iPod 6G manual. Bootloader handling differs; do not reuse Video instructions.
  3. Test playback, volume, buttons, shutdown and USB reconnection before copying the full library.

How to add and find music

  1. Connect the iPod as a USB drive and copy files into /Music; do not put them in /.rockbox.
  2. Open Files for folders or initialise Database for artist, album and genre.
  3. iTunes-synced tracks may have altered names inside the hidden iPod_Control folder. Database can index them; organised folders are easier to manage.
  4. Update Rockbox with Utility or the manual for your target while keeping your data.

Real benefits and limitations

  • Benefits: gapless, ReplayGain, advanced EQ, many formats, themes and folder management.
  • Limitations: a more technical interface, a learning curve and model-dependent compatibility.
  • FAT32 is required; converting from HFS+ needs care and can erase the disk.
  • Third-party themes and plugins may have extra requirements: test the standard build first.

Common problems

Utility cannot see the iPod Check model, cable, disk access and format; use a direct USB port.
“File not found” appears The .rockbox folder is missing, incomplete or in the wrong location.
Music is missing Use Files or update Database; check tags and hidden iTunes folders.
The unexpected system starts Check the model-specific bootloader; do not use the Video procedure on Classic.
