iPod Classic and a modern Mac mini: recognition and music
An iPod Classic can still work with a recent Mac mini. The key point is: the Mac must first see the iPod in Finder; the Music app manages your library, but is not the first place to solve a recognition issue. On a Mac, the operating system is called macOS, not iOS.
The approach we recommend
- Connect directly: use an original or certified Dock cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter that supports data, not charging only. For the first test, avoid monitors, cheap hubs and extension leads.
- Finder before Music: open Finder, enable View → Show Sidebar if needed, and look for the iPod under Locations. If it appears, it is recognised.
- Sync: select the iPod in Finder, open the Music tab, enable “Sync music onto [iPod]”, choose the whole library or selected playlists/artists/albums, then click Apply and Sync.
If Finder cannot see it, test in this order
- Cable and adapter: try another Dock cable and another data-capable adapter. Charging alone does not prove that the data line works.
- Another port: connect the adapter straight to the Mac mini, without a hub. Temporarily disconnect other USB accessories.
- Restart the iPod: hold MENU + centre button for around 6–10 seconds until the Apple logo appears, then reconnect it.
- Check the Mac hardware: hold ⌥, choose → System Information, then open USB. If no iPod/Apple device appears there, the issue is almost certainly physical: cable, adapter, Dock connector or iPod.
- If it appears in USB but not Finder: reopen Finder, restart the Mac and check Disk Utility → View → Show All Devices. Do not initialise or erase the drive if you want to keep the music.
Adding music safely
- Purchased music or your own files: import MP3, non-protected AAC, ALAC, AIFF or WAV into Music, then use Finder’s Music tab to sync playlists or albums.
- Manual management: in the iPod’s General tab, turn on “Manually manage music, movies and TV shows”. In Music you can then use Autofill or drag tracks to the device when it appears in the sidebar.
- Apple Music subscription: streaming catalogue tracks cannot be copied to an iPod Classic. Use DRM-free purchases, ripped CDs or music files you own.
- Rockbox: with Rockbox you can copy music in Finder as ordinary files and browse folders. Do not mix Rockbox file copying and Apple syncing unless you know which system you want to use.
Still not connecting?
Request a diagnosis: we check the Dock connector, battery, hard drive and sync path before proposing a repair.
