How to check your original iPod hard drive: the SMART menu
If your iPod Video 5/5.5 gen or Classic 6/7 gen still has its original mechanical hard drive, you can see its SMART data in the diagnostic menu. It is useful before a repair and does not erase music or settings. Back up first if you can.
Before you start
- This guide is only for full-size iPods with the original mechanical drive. SSD and iFlash do not show these readings.
- Charge the iPod or connect power, and turn HOLD off.
- The diagnostic menu is basic and in English: that is normal.
How to reach HDSmartData
- Hold MENU + centre button until the iPod restarts and the Apple logo appears.
- As soon as the logo appears, release them and hold centre button + previous/rewind (|<<). The diagnostic menu opens.
- Press MENU for Manual Test, then go to I/O → HardDrive → HDSmartData.
- Write down or photograph the values. To leave, choose Reset in diagnostics or hold MENU + centre again.
Reading the important values
| Campo | Cosa indica | Come leggerlo |
|---|---|---|
| Reallocs | Sectors the drive has already replaced with spare sectors after an error. | 0 is ideal. Any value above 0 calls for a backup and monitoring; if it rises, plan a replacement. |
| Pending Sectors | Sectors the drive cannot currently read reliably and may need remapping. | They should be 0. Even a small value is a prompt to back up immediately and consider an upgrade. |
| Retracts | Emergency head parks, often linked to knocks or power loss. | On its own, it does not diagnose the drive. Look at Reallocs and Pending Sectors first. |
| PowerOn Hours / Start/Stops | Usage hours and number of starts/stops. | They describe age and use; they do not decide drive health by themselves. |
Quick verdict
- Reallocs 0 + Pending 0: SMART is not reporting problematic sectors.
- Reallocs above 0 + Pending 0: back up, check values over time and watch for freezes or skipping.
- Pending above 0: back up straight away. The drive is unstable and SSD or iFlash is advisable.
Want it checked or replaced?
In the repair form you can include your SMART values; we can replace the drive with SSD or iFlash.
